Stretch your color over many stones with Surface Coloring

Surface Coloring Steps
Ready For Color
Concrete is mixed and ready for color.
Color Added
Start by working the surface of the concrete vigorously patting the surface with the trowel to release air bubbles and to settle aggregate below the surface to create a smooth wet surface. Add more water as needed to keep the surface wet, muddy and workable. Add color by sprinkling colored powder over the top surface areas to be colored. Mix color into the top 1/2" layer of the surface and smooth. For a real stone look add multiple colors in random areas around the surface of the stone.
Colored Stone
Gently remove form and touch up areas with trowel, add any additional color if needed. Here is where you can add texture if you like. Have fun and remember, natural stone colors are random and are not perfect.

Coloring Variations
You decide the stone color by how much surface color you apply.  The more you apply the darker the color.
Red Color Variations
Note:
  • All colors will lighten as concrete cures.
  • Seal all concrete when concrete is fully cured.

For Full Concrete Coloring:
  • Use 3 pounds of ironoxx per 94 pounds of cement for brick red.
  • Always perform a sample batch to confirm acceptability to the color result.
  • Complete Coloring of Concrete.
  • Recommended for coloring of ready-mix concrete.

Approximate mix ratios:
  • 1 or 2 lbs of Ironoxx per 94 pound bag of cement for light shades
  • 2 to 4 lbs of Ironoxx per 94 pound bag of cement for medium shades
  • 5 or more pounds Ironoxx per 94 pounds of cement for darker shades.

Using grey concrete will result in buff or softer color. Using white cement will result in brighter color. To ensure consistent color, keep all variables the same from batch to batch. Variations in the mix design, mixing time and curing conditions will affect the final color.
